Local SEO website rebuild + ongoing growth retainer

Smoke Drop runs Houston’s most-reviewed independent smoke shop — 641 five-star Google reviews, a physical store on Gulf Freeway near Hobby Airport, and a customer base that finds them through Google every day. Their previous site looked fine. It didn’t rank, didn’t load, and didn’t reflect the brand the store had earned in person.

Our brief was simple: rebuild the site so the digital presence catches up with the physical one — and turn the website itself into an asset that compounds.

The Diagnosis

What was broken before the rebuild.

We don't redesign sites that work. We rebuild the ones whose problems are measurable. Here's what we measured.

The Strategy

The Ranklift Method™, applied to a local smoke shop.

Same four-phase system we use on every build — re-applied to the specifics of high-compliance retail in a competitive Houston market.

01 — Diagnose

Map the search behaviour, not the product catalogue

We started with how Houston customers actually find a smoke shop on Google: city + neighbourhood + product modifiers, late-night intent, near-me queries clustered around Gulf Freeway and Hobby Airport. That keyword map became the page architecture — not the inverse.

02 — Architect

Neighbourhood pages with real local intent

Five neighbourhood-targeted pages were scoped — Gulf Freeway, Greater Hobby Area, South Houston, Pasadena TX, East Houston — each with its own URL, its own page title, its own meta description, its own LocalBusiness-aware copy. Internal links cross-reference each other contextually inside body copy, not just from the footer.

03 — Engineer

Schema-first, performance-first, then design

Store + WebSite + BreadcrumbList JSON-LD was wired into the theme layout. The age gate was rebuilt to be crawlable (no JS gate blocking bots). WebP everywhere, preload on the logo, Google Fonts loaded once at the document head with font-display: swap. The visual design only started after that foundation passed Lighthouse on a mid-range Android emulator.

04 — Amplify

Compounding the asset over time

A blog content cluster around Houston smoke shop topics now feeds the neighbourhood pages with internal authority. Google Business Profile alignment, NAP consistency across all pages, and structured review surfacing keep the local trust signals reinforcing each other.

The Execution

What we actually built.

The unsexy details that decide whether a local site ranks. None of these are optional.

SEO architecture before pixels

Page hierarchy, keyword mapping, and schema were scoped before any visual design. Every page that exists has a search reason to exist.

Mobile-first tap-to-call

Sticky call CTA on mobile, single-tap directions to Google Maps, prominent hours display. The store is a physical destination — the website is a conversion to walk-in.

Age-gate UX without breaking SEO

21+ gate is rendered after content for crawlers but presented as a modal for human visitors — preserves indexability while complying with category requirements.

Premium typography on a fast budget

Barlow Condensed for display, Outfit for body. One stylesheet request, single critical font subset, swap-loaded.

Live reviews surfacing

641 Google reviews aren't just embedded — they're structured as AggregateRating in the LocalBusiness schema, eligible for rich result eligibility checks.

Edge cases handled by default

Custom 404, working canonical strategy, OG image fallback for non-article templates, BreadcrumbList emitted only where it makes semantic sense.

The Results

Measurable, post-launch.

Numbers shown reflect post-launch state. Compounding gains continue under the ongoing retainer.
